aeration

Breath new life into your lawn

Heavy clay soils like we have here in the Charlotte area, compact very quickly.  Compacted soil will suffocate the grass plant by preventing oxygen and water from reaching the roots. This will lead to shallow root systems and a lawn that is prone to wilt easily. Over time, lawn stress due to compacted soil will weaken the grass making it less able to compete with weeds and slow to recuperate from injury.

What is Core Aeration?

A core aeration machine is used to remove small plugs of dirt which are deposited onto the surface of the lawn.  These plugs and then allowed to break down and loosely mix back into the soil.

Benefits of Lawn Aeration

  •  Improved turf health: The voids created when the plugs are removed create pathways for more air, water and nutrients to reach the root zone.
  • Strong Roots: Reducing compaction allows the roots room to grow. With a healthy root system your lawn is better able to uptake nutrients and withstand the stresses caused by drought, disease and pests.
  • Improved Drainage:  Creating new channels for the water to enter the soil, results in less water runoff and standing water.
  • Stimulate new Growth: Aeration stimulates the grass to produce new shoots and roots that “fill up” the holes in the lawn and increase the density of the turf.

When is the best time to aerate and seed?

Different grass type need to have aeration performed at different times of the year.

For Bermuda Lawns: With low weed pressure and peak growth, the summer is the optimal time for Aerating your warm season grass.

For Fescue Lawns: Aeration and Overseeding is recommended in the Fall.  With low weed pressure, peak growth and great seed germination conditions, this is the optimal time for Aerating and Overseeding your cool season grass.
